Enhanced by beautiful summer weather and a warm welcome by the Club, the Classic Boats Regatta hosted by the Christchurch Yacht Club on 17 January was voted a great success by all involved.

The display of 22 boats on the forecourt of the Clubhouse during the morning gave everyone an opportunity to appreciate the wide range of craft and to discuss restoration processes, history, or the building of replica classic boats. Boats ranged in age from the 1940’s through to recent replicas and new builds. At each event there is usually at least one new restoration or perhaps a new replica. On this occasion it was a delight to see Ian and Alison Milne’s Oughtred designed Shetland yole that had just been launched in Dunedin a few days before.  (See details under “Sooty Tern" (25/10/14) in this blog).

During the afternoon most boats took to the water to enjoy a sail or to motor around Moncks Bay and up into the Estuary. The strong flood tide made for some challenges but the CYC patrol craft provided great support as well as getting some good photographs!

An important purpose for the group is to provide opportunities for like-minded people to meet, share experiences and expertise. Also, we always hope that club-based events like this will attract the ‘old salts’ to come and participate or just come to view, talk and share their expertise.  At CYC it was great to welcome again Bill Nicholson, a master craftsman, with his beautiful clinker boat the Janet K. Bill was Commodore of the CYC in the early 1950’s. Similarly Graham Mander, a regular supporter of our group, once again shared his knowledge and vast experiences from many years back.

Events like this have a real appeal for those who just like ‘messing about in boats’ along with the camaraderie of good company. This was very evident during the day and particularly during the Clubhouse gathering to enjoy a magnificent ‘Classic Afternoon Tea’. It was fabulous hospitality which had to be seen to be believed and our grateful thanks must go to the providers for such generosity - greatly appreciated by everyone.

To those who couldn’t make it to CYC, you missed a great day. Most importantly our sincere thanks to Jo Hooker (Commodore) and her team on and off the water for providing such great day for all along with the invitation to do it all again next year.

We’ll be back!

Looks like a great day out! Hopefully we'll see lots at Naval Point.
