The extraordinary and tragic events of the Ides of March in Christchurch, gave pause to deciding if we were to hold our Classic Boat Regatta at Lake Hood this year. After consulting members it was decided to go ahead and the general consensus was it was the right thing to do. With 23 boats present it made a great sight, model boats were well represented too with powered models and sailing craft.

We got under way with a welcome from Ashburton Sailing Club's Grant Badger, Peter Braithwaite called for a minutes silence to honour the victims of the terrorist attack and was interrupted by Chris Thompson of Ashburton, “ I have my pipes, would you like me to play a lament ?” This was accepted and duly played – it was a touching moment, greatly appreciated.

After lunch and a briefing, the fleet was divided into three groups according to size and ability, smaller craft off first and the other groups at three minute intervals. A box course was sailed in a moderate NE with the faster boats gradually overtaking the smaller boats. Several rounds were completed, perfect sailing conditions. Rowing and power boats were able to follow the action as well, it was good to see Arthur Pretty back with his dory slipping along with ease.

This is an event looked forward to each year, lake sailing is so different, especially with Lake Hood's easy access and pleasant surroundings – it went well.
The day concluded at the Lake House Restaurant with drinks and tall stories !

  • Things of note:
  • Thanks to the Ashburton Sailing Club for hosting us.
  • Some lovely clinker boats including Gavin Walters new acquisition

  • Peter Vincent for organising the model boats.
  • The great feeling of camaraderie we have !
